Fog + Open Water = Extra Caution!

Swimming in the sea at sunrise can be one of the most magical moments of the day — but when fog rolls in, the magic gives way to caution.⠀
Along the Portuguese coast, fog is a common summer occurrence, especially in the mornings. It forms when warm, humid air comes into contact with the cold sea water, creating a low, dense cloud that drastically reduces visibility.
👉 And that changes everything for those in the water!⠀
Tips to swim more safely on foggy days (or avoid them):
Carefully assess visibility: if you can’t clearly see reference points on the shore or other swimmers, postponing your swim might be the wisest choice.
Avoid swimming alone.
Always use a safety buoy — preferably one with a waterproof compartment.
Carry your phone inside the buoy: in case of emergency, call 112 or the Portuguese Navy emergency number – 185.
Take a compass and know which direction to head in case you lose visual references.
Wear a bright-coloured swim cap and, if possible, a signal light.⠀
💬 Swimming safely is the first step to fully enjoying the open water experience.
